How the calculator works

Adding: VAT = amount × rate and total = amount + VAT. Removing: net = total ÷ (1 + rate), and the VAT is the difference. Amounts are rounded to the currency's decimals.

Rates are each country's standard rate at the time of writing. Some goods and services are zero-rated or exempt, so check with your tax authority.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by the VAT rate to get the VAT, then add it to the price. Example: 1,000 at 15% = 150 VAT and a total of 1,150.

How do I take VAT out of a VAT-inclusive amount?

Divide the total by (1 + the rate) to get the net price; the difference is the VAT. Example: 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = 1,000, so the VAT is 150.

Why do some countries show a 0% rate?

Because these countries have no VAT at the time of writing: Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Qatar, Somalia, Syria. The calculator shows zero VAT; if your country introduces it, check its tax authority.

How many decimals are used for rounding?

The currency's own decimals: two for the Saudi riyal, UAE dirham and Egyptian pound, three for the Kuwaiti, Bahraini and Jordanian dinars and the Omani rial. The VAT is rounded to the nearest unit.

Is the result official?

It is a helper using the standard rates at the time of writing. Some goods and services are zero-rated or exempt, and rules change, so confirm with your tax authority or accountant.
